Roblox Ending Legacy Chat Service

Roblox has shut down LegacyChatService on the gaming platform by converting to a new system, and players are voicing their concerns over the mandatory change. Opinions on the loss of Roblox’s Legacy Chat noted that several older games on the platform relied on the chat system to operate, since the developers may be banned. Furthermore, other comments pointed out the older chat system had a more creative layout, as opposed to the newer corporate-looking design.
Roblox was created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel and opened to the public in 2006, amassing an average of 85 million daily active users as of February 2025. To demonstrate the platform’s popularity, restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill launched a Roblox game offering free burritos recently, showing how integrated this specific gaming system has become with real-world culture.
Roblox confirmed back in late 2024 that the Legacy Chat was being converted to a TextChatService, and players had until April 30, 2025 to migrate. Following Roblox’s updated restrictions to protect children, which added new limitations late in 2024, the devs noted the primary reason for the change to TextChatService was to ensure all chat messages honored the platform’s parental controls. Additionally, the Roblox team noted they anticipated that additional changes would have to be implemented in the future to support further safety and legal requirements.
Roblox Converts Legacy Chat to Text Chat Service
Roblox’s voice chat remains a popular way to communicate on the platform, and this, too, has a list of features for parents to safeguard their kids. While the change is positive for the young community, several Redditors were concerned about how the conversion would affect admin games if they didn’t get transferred. Discussed in a Reddit thread posted on the game’s subreddit by idkallex, many thought this change would be the death of admin titles. One user shared that the shutdown of Legacy Chat may lead to the privatization of certain games, since Roblox would attempt to auto-convert all games to TextChatService after the April deadline. In failing that attempt, Roblox could disable the chat in unconverted games or turn them private until the chat is converted or disabled by the owner.
The end of Legacy Chat has left a portion of the player base uncertain about the impact this will have on gaming, and another recent change has puzzled more players. Roblox quietly renamed “Friends” within an internal build, but the amendment is reportedly still in development and hasn’t been officially announced yet. Still, the random name change has confused players who questioned the reasoning behind it, and an answer is yet to be given.
